  The Pelorus Bridge is the site of the famous barrel scene from the Hobbit. Beyond that it is an amazing place to spend time hiking, swimming, or picnicking. We crossed the road and went down to the river bank and a bit up the river away from the bridge and found a swimming hole that was deep enough to dive off a rock into (the rock we found wasn't as high as the one closer to the bridge so it was more comfortable to dive off of). The water was perfect temperature for a warm day and there wasn't a strong current so swimming was easy. There was a small sandy bank to lie down in the sun to dry off after.
